Even better than the ’06, the 2005 Bodegas Alto Moncayo Campo de Borja Aquilon boasts a knockout bouquet of blackberry liqueur, sweet oak, vanilla, licorice and toasty spice. In the mouth the wine is pure silk with a full body, a stunning, pure texture, perfect balance and a clean, precise finish. This has solid acidity that keeps it light on the palate and a joy to drink. While I think this wine could age, I can’t see a reason to wait.

The 2005 Aquilon has a splendid perfume of slate, violets, and cherry compote. There is beautiful integration of oak, tannin, and acidity, a smooth texture, layers of flavor, and exceptional length. 100% Garnacha, 20 months in new oak (60% US, 40% French). Lots of sweet oak spice on the nose, very peppery and juicy. Fine tannins and smooth finish but the US oak vanilla sweetness is rather dominant at the moment. Sweet and toasty but a bit too alcoholic at 16%. (JH)
