Michel’s 2010 Chablis Les Clos comes across as big, rich and powerful. It is rather viscous on the palate, as there was a touch of botrytis in the vineyard. In 2010, it is the vintage that speaks most loudly. I can’t say this is an especially typical Les Clos, but it is a beautiful wine if taken on its own terms. Nectarine, peaches, exotic flowers and anise meld together on the textured finish. Anticipated maturity: 2013+. Guillaume Gicqueau-Michel describes 2011 as a synthesis of 2009 and 2010, with the fleshiness of the former and the tension of the latter. Yields came in around historical averages, as opposed to 2010, which was down 20% across the board. The 2011s were born with considerable flesh, and were therefore spent less time on their lees than normal, with the exception of the grand crus. I tasted all of the 2011s from tank. Michel planned to bottle his 2011 premier crus in October 2012 and the grand crus the following spring. By comparison the 2010s saw extremely long fermentations, partly because of the estate’s reliance on natural yeasts. Like all growers in Chablis in this vintage, Michel described the vintage as significantly influenced by a complicated flowering that lowered yields and produced a high incidence of shatter and shot grapes. The 2010 grand crus were bottled in mid-April 2012. I was surprised by how well the wines are drinking today. Importer: Vineyard Brands, Birmingham, AL; tel. (205) 980-8802

Subtle, complex aromas of orange blossom, peach and iodine. Highly concentrated and gripping, with a fine-grained texture and restrained fruit. Most impressive today on the very subtle but ultimately palate-staining finish, which features a whiplash of citrus flavor and outstanding saline persistence. This classic Chablis should go on for 15 or 20 years and may ultimately merit an even higher score.
Pale, green-tinged color. Expressive aromas of pineapple, ginger and crushed stone. Tightly wound but nicely ripe, with a penetrating quality to the subtle flavors of fresh peach, pineapple, mint and powdered stone. Quite reticent in the middle palate but mounts subtly on the back end and really perfumes the mouth. Not a particularly fleshy wine but strong and classy on the finish, showing notes of spiced peach and minerals. This very young Clos should put on weight with eight to ten years of bottle aging.
