Bright ruby color. Knockout nose combines black fruits, smoke, licorice, pepper and a strong rocky character. Quite suave on entry, then thick but vibrant in the middle, with powerful, well- integrated acidity accentuating the impression of intensity. A very tactile, concentrated petite sirah with terrific inner-palate energy. Finishes savory, chewy and very long. Impressive.

Although pinched with screeching tannins, the backward, unevolved 2005 Petite Syrah Rattlesnake Ridge will repay those who have the foresight to lay it away for 10-15 years. It is loaded with potential, but is nearly impenetrable at present. Previously recommended: As indicated last year, 2004 was a terrific vintage for Turley Zinfandels. If they can still be found, I would opt for purchasing them over their lighter 2005 counterparts.
