The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Les Noirots 1er Cru is one of two debuts from the domaine this year, consisting of two-and-a-half barrels from their 0.15 hectares of 65-year-old vine. This was showing a little reduction on the nose, which features dark berry fruit laced with tobacco and woodland scents. The palate is medium-bodied with a fresh orange peel and espresso-tinged entry. Plenty of fruit here, but quite structured and more masculine toward the saline finish. There is a welcome twist of sour cherry on the aftertaste. Excellent.

For the first time—at the instigation of her son, Clément—Barthod elected to vinify a barrel of the 2017 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Noirots separately instead of incorporating it into her decidedly superior Chambolle Village. Offering up expressive aromas of licorice, blackberries, blood orange and dark chocolate, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and layered, with a deep core of dark fruit and chalky structuring tannins that lend it a more mineral profile than this year's Beaux Bruns.
