Punteggio 93/100 · Da bere 2023-2030, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Oct 2021

The 2018 Mourvèdre is a bold, luscious wine that shows all of the natural savoriness of the year. Black cherry, chocolate, licorice and sweet spice are all dialed to the maximum. There is tremendous density and pure power here, but less in the way of nuance. Today, the 2018 feels a bit heavy. The blend includes touches of Syrah and Viognier. Vineyard sources are Alta Mesa, Larner and Watch Hill. Aging was 21 months in French oak, 50% new.

The 2018 Mourvèdre is a blend of 85% Mourvèdre, 12% Syrah and 3% Viognier, coming from Alta Mesa vineyard (Santa Barbara County), Larner vineyard (Ballard Canyon) and Watch Hill vineyard (Alisos Canyon). The wine was vinified using 75% whole cluster and aged for around 21 months in 50% new French oak barrique and demi-muid and 50% used French barrique. The alcohol is 15.6%. Very deep purple-black, the 2018 Mourvèdre leaps from the glass with vibrant notes of wild blueberries, crushed black cherries and mulberries with touches of roses, tar and cigars plus a hint of cardamom. The beautifully crafted, tightly knit, full-bodied palate has a firm, fine-grained texture and lively backbone, finishing long and savory. 400 cases and a few magnums were made.

Another wine that flirts with perfection is the 2018 Mourvedre, and you’d be hard pressed to find a better Mourvèdre out there. Offering a beautiful freshness as well as powerful notes of black and blue fruits, violets, ground pepper, iron, and a touch of bloody meat, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, ripe, silky tannins, no hard edges, and one heck of a great finish. This powerful, stacked Mourvèdre should have 15 years of longevity. The 2018 checks in as 85% Mourvedre, 12% Syrah, and the balance Viognier that was 25% destemmed and spent 21 months in 50% new French oak barriques and 600-liter demi-muids.
