The 2001 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Porrets Saint-Georges 1er Cru is rather lean on the nose and evidently needs more fruit. Eventually scents of blackberry and cranberry, damp woodland (moss?) and clove emerge, but this 2001 is firmly within secondary aromatic territory. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, balanced but showing some dryness on the finish. This just feels as if it is dropping away, so drink soon. Tasted at the Gouges retrospective at La Cabotte.

Good full red. Redcurrant, iron, mocha, leather, herbs and underbrush on the nose. Sweeter and more pliant than the village wine but vinous and fresh, with the building tannins arriving later, allowing the flavors to express themselves. This needs at least four or five years of additional cellaring.
Bright ruby-red. Vibrant, vinous aromas of currant and licorice. Fresh, juicy and tightly wound, with lovely intensity. Classic sturdy, solid Nuits. Finishes long and subtle, with firm, rather fine tannins.
