The 2018 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru is obdurate and backward on the nose. Dark berry fruit mixed with undergrowth reluctantly unfold in the glass, beautifully defined and focused. The palate seems to have just a bit of CO2 on the entry. A thick and perhaps unnecessary layer of new oak lacquers the dense fruit. Overtly powerful, it almost bludgeons you on the finish. Long-term, brutish yet somehow compelling. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.

The 2018 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru has an intense bouquet, perhaps with some of that broodiness I noted out of barrel, yet still exquisitely defined, featuring earthy dark berry fruit laced with black truffle and bay leaf. The palate is medium-bodied but delivers good grip and conspicuous density. This is a Mazis-Chambertin that means business. It wants to impress, but on its own terms. Have a cellar handy, as well as plenty of patience.
Lovely aromatic integration of clove, floral tones and red fruit, with a linear purity. Fine tannins and a long, perfumed finish show that this is the real deal. (TJ)
