Punteggio 95/100 · Da bere 2026-2048, Neal Martin, Jan 2026

The 2019 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru is the latest vintage to be commercially released. Frédéric Mugnier deserves applause for his approach of waiting until the wines reach a simulacrum of maturity. This offers gorgeous wild strawberry, cranberry, violets and iodine on the nose, with plenty of fruit as you would expect in this vintage. Oddly, it exposes the substance missing in many of the 2024s tasted at the same time. The palate is medium-bodied with an edgy orange rind-tinged opening, layers of dark berry fruit, cedar and brown spices that segue to a harmonious, almost uncharacteristically burly finish that will benefit from another couple of years in bottle. Mugnier in full flight - just exquisite.

The 2019 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru comes across as a little smudged on the nose compared to its peers, with touches of leather and mint. The palate is medium-bodied and succulent, offering black cherry fruit, white pepper and sour cherry. This is notably structured toward the finish, with a persistent, peppery close that feels just a little drier than I would have liked. Overall, this is just a tad less animated compared to its peers, perhaps even rustic by comparison, yet it is not without charm. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

One of the wines of the vintage, Mugnier's 2019 Musigny Grand Cru is stunning. Wafting from the glass with incipiently complex aromas of orange rind, cherries, sweet red berries, Indian spices, rose hips, potpourri, raw cocoa and grilled squab pigeon, it's full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, its sumptuous and enveloping attack segueing into a layered core of fruit framed by rich, immensely velvety tannins. Long and even rather dramatic for a young Musigny, for all its undeniable concentration and elegantly muscular structure, it displays not the slightest youthful asperity.
