Very dark and intense in color, the 2009 Blaufrankisch Burgenland Reserve opens with a beautifully seductive, intense, floral/vegetal and fresh nose with flavors of freshly broken runner beans, savory, tobacco leaves, dark berries, crushed slate, Tasmanian pepper, orange oil, tea and tar. This nose does not cease to develop and fascinate me in its purity, intensity and complexity. The attack on the palate is generous, but very fine, intense and sweet. It is structured and fresh, powerful, juicy and really long. Full-bodied and warm, with a great finesse and lingering freshness. This is another legend in the Moric portfolio since it combines power and concentration with elegance and finesse. Start drinking it very, very slowly.

South-facing slopes and as high as 400 m, schist at the top, 95% from limestone in the middle. Wanted to make a fine version of Blaufränkisch compared to those with more specific geographical provenance. Purplish. Lots of blue still there. Very fresh and racy. Expressively aromatic. Lovely supple stuff – low tannins. Polished and already drinkable. Some tasteable limestone but seems quite evolved. (JR)
