Punteggio 96/100 · Da bere 2028-2050, Neal Martin, Sep 2024

The 2020 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru has a pure nose with black and blueberry fruit and a little more new oak than its peers, and it doesn't have the same amplitude. Blood orange hints later appear. The palate is medium-bodied with high-toned new oak. The 2020 presents polished, well-judged natural acidity, a little spicier towards the second half, with white pepper notes becoming prominent towards the finish. There is a linearity behind this wine that I really like. Excellent. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

The 2020 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru has an instantly striking bouquet with pure red fruit laced with crushed stone and a touch of iris petal in the background. Love at first sniff? The palate is supremely well balanced with filigree tannins, an ethereal sense of symmetry and pixelation towards the finish reminiscent of Roumier's own Musigny. Great intensity and length here - this is an enthralling prospect that I cannot wait to taste in bottle (hopefully).

The 2020 Musigny Grand Cru unwinds in the glass with a profound bouquet of raspberries and plums mingled with notions of musk, licorice, Indian spices, violets and black truffle. Full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, it's rich and concentrated, with lively acids, powdery tannins and a long, saline finish. For all its intensity and drama, it remains remarkably seamless, even effortless. But that's the essence of Mugnier's style, and of Musigny at its best.
