Punteggio 90/100 · Da bere 2015-2023, Jeb Dunnuck, Wine Advocate, Oct 2015

A big success in the vintage, the 2013 Châteauneuf du Pape is 80% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 7% Mourvèdre and 3% Cinsault, all of which spent six months in stainless steel before being moved to concrete tank, where it rested for 12 months before bottling. Licorice, blackberries, mulled spices, and peppered meat-like aromas and flavors all emerge from this medium to full-bodied, textured and beautifully balanced 2013. It has surprising depth and richness in the vintage, as well as beautiful tannin quality. I like it now, but it will drink nicely through 2023.

Vivid purple. Perfumed, expansive bouquet of sexy red and dark berry liqueur and incense, along with hints of lavender and cola. Silky, sweet and broad, offering spice-tinged black raspberry and boysenberry flavors and a touch of bitter chocolate. The clinging finish is framed by smooth, slow-building tannins.

Punteggio 16.5/20 · Da bere 2018-2026, Jancis Robinson MW, Oct 2014

80% Grenache, 10% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah/Cinsault/Counoise. 100% destemmed. A long 25-day maceration with pigeage in stainless-steel tanks at a maximum temperature of 28° C. Matured for 18 months in vat prior to blending and bottling. Very dark purple. Unusual-looking. Exceptionally ripe on the nose. I cannot find much of Châteauneuf in this black-cherry compote but it’s certainly attention-grabbing and one can only wonder at how they managed to coax these flavours out of the late-ripening 2013s. Very slightly sickly but certainly impressive. Falls away rather than refreshes. (JR)
