Punteggio 15/20 · Da bere 2016-2022, Julia Harding MW, jancisrobinson.com, Jan 2017

Tasted blind. De Boüard consulting. Mid garnet. Dusty and leafy on the nose. But sweeter and rather attractive red fruits on the palate. Softer tannins than most and finishes sweet but fresh. Slight but balanced. (JH)

The 2013 Villemaurine has a slightly austere bouquet with a light sea spray influence mixed with gravel. The palate is medium-bodied with a supple opening and more flesh than the aromatics suggest. Smooth and quite harmonious, it is a Saint Emilion that starts in modest fashion but ends with a bit of a kick. This is a satisfying if unspectacular Villemaurine, but I wager that a decade ago, this fast-improving estate would have produced a far more inferior wine than this 2013. In that way, it should be considered a success.

Overripe fruit and the slightest fungal note to the palate. Fine tannic weave, refreshing acid but the finish has a sour lilt which seems connected to that fungal quality. (RH)

Juicy and bright fruit profile. Plum, black cherry – really nicely crafted. Good persistence too. The missing link is profound complexity, but there is plenty of easy-drinking enjoyability on offer here anyway. (RH)
