Bright medium red. Much less aromatic and minerally than the Petite Chapelle today, hinting at cherry, menthol and stone. Nicely concentrated but youthfully imploded; a chewier style than the Petite Chapelle but without that wine's floral and mineral high notes. Today the wine's tannic spine cuts off the fruit. I suspect this wine is going through a stunted stage of its evolution in barrels, as the finish hints at lovely lift.

The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers has a very detailed and perfumed bouquet that delivers layers of mineral-driven red berry fruit that really translate the terroir. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, good substance, a little oaky toward the finish but that will be subsumed to leave you with a fine Cazetiers that may surpass the 2015. Superb.
Cask sample. 15 months in French oak. Mid crimson. Dark fruited and withheld; extremely elegant on the palate and all in harmony already. Dry finesse to the texture with the juicy fruit seeming out round the edges. Supple and persistent and greater beauty to come. (JH)
