Punteggio 90/100 · Da bere 2013-2016, Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, Feb 2013

A blend of 60% Monastrell, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Syrah, the 2010 18 Meses is raised for 18 months in new French and American oak. For a wine that delivers 15.5% alcohol, the bouquet is tamed and controlled with fresh blackberry, date and iodine notes that waft gently from the glass alongside the nicely integrated oak. The palate is full-bodied with boysenberry and blackberry on the entry. It is succulent but very well balanced with a crisp seam of acidity that lends it a surprising lightness of touch on the finish. This is a beautifully crafted, flavor-packed Jumilla wine, although I would revel in its youth rather than let it age. Drink now-2016. Founded in 2002, the Gil Vera family can trace their viticultural roots back to their great grandfather, Juan Gil, who commenced making wine in 1916. The winery is located just north of Jumilla (town) where Monastrell copes with the arid weather condition. While a couple of the entry-level wines were found to be a little volatile, there is no question that they represent very good value, while the silver label Monastrell is outstanding for the price. Importer: Gil Family Estates, Jumilla, Spain, with various importers/distributors.
