Punteggio 95/100 · Da bere 2024-2030, Neal Martin, Nov 2024

The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaut St-Jacques Vieilles Vignes 1er Cru has an attractive nose with touches of red plum, bergamot and blue fruit, which become increasingly floral in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied, quite fleshy and lightly spiced with fine tannins, a keen line of acidity and a lilting finish. It's wonderful.

Reliably one of the highlights of Duroché's portfolio, the 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaut Saint-Jacques Vieilles Vignes lives up to expectations, wafting from the glass with aromas of cassis, wild berries, raspberries, dark chocolate, peonies, rich soil tones and cedar. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, fleshy and concentrated, with a bright spine of acidity, ripe tannins and a long, sapid finish.

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaut Saint-Jacques Vieilles Vignes 1er Cru, which comes from vines planted in 1923, takes a little time to find its groove, but eventually reveals wonderful blackberry and briary, undergrowth and subtle autumn leaf aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with silky smooth tannins, a fine bead of acidity with a fleshy, open and tensile finish, quite saline on the aftertaste. On this showing, I remain to be convinced that it is inherently superior to the regular cuvée in this vintage. Just three barrels produced.
