Punteggio 17/20 · Da bere 2030-2040, Tamlyn Currin, jancisrobinson.com, Jan 2025

Certified biodynamic. This has a certain cold-stone clench and hunker-down about it, and even the cranberry brightness of its fruit has the feel and sheen of polished stone. Nice bite. Wintergreen lift. Cool restraint and density; cool strength. (TC)

The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin La Perrière 1er Cru is matured with 40% whole bunch in 30% new oak. This had quite a lot of reduction on the nose, though there appears to be some attractive spicy fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy, slightly chalky tannins that frame pure black cherry and raspberry fruit, with hints of blue fruit manifesting on the finish. I would afford this two or three years in bottle because there is plenty of potential here. Heresztyn-Mazzini is an estate that I have visited regularly for a decade now. They might not be one of Gevrey’s “superstars,” but they have been producing excellent wine for several years. Underlying their success is a cluster of choice holdings, biodynamic vineyard husbandry and an attention to detail in the winery, where I find assiduous use of whole clusters. Their 2023s may well be the finest set of releases so far, perhaps better than the 2022s. “We did a green harvest in July for two weeks. There was a lot of rain that month, so we used silica when it was dry, which helped with the structure of the wine. I had never seen such a precocious vintage. Picking began on September 7 and the average yield was around 35 hl/ha.”
