Punteggio 17.5/20 · Da bere 2024-2035, Julia Harding MW, jancisrobinson.com, Mar 2024

A slight, south-facing slope in the middle of the plateau. Iron-rich clay over limestone sediments. Vines 90–115 years old. A little lighter in colour than most of Moric's wines and still looks so youthful. This is a little darker-fruited than the Kirchberg, but no less fragrant. There's more obvious stony minerality, perhaps, and the cooler vintage shows in the subtle stemmy/herbal note. Incredibly juicy on the palate with super-fine tannins and showing the cooler vintage in a lightness of touch. Dry and almost chalky on the finish. (JH)

From the plateau and only slightly facing toward the south, the 2020 Lutzmannsburg Ried Maissner is based on vines planted in 1908 and 1936 on iron-rich clay soil. The wine opens with a deep, intense and complex bouquet of perfectly ripe and concentrated dark fruits, such as blueberries, raspberries and dried red fruits, and heath and hibiscus intermingled with pure terroir notes such as black tea and candied blood oranges. Silky, refined and elegant on the palate, this is a seductive, filigreed, refined yet intense and complex Blaufränkisch with very fine tannins, mineral freshness and tension, which leads the wine to a long, intense and refreshing, dry and saline finish that celebrates the fine tannins and great grape material. There is even a crystalline character with great precision, finesse and salinity. It's a fabulous red wine from the Burgenland. 13.5% stated alcohol. Tasted in Lech in December 2022.

Deep nose of licorice and blackberries. Very deep and ripe, yet so bright and precise, with a huge structure composed of very fine tannins. Long, seriously structured finish that may be too much for some, but really excites us. From 2 parcels planted in 1933 and 1908. Drinkable now, but best from 2024.
