Punteggio 94/100 · Da bere 2029-2041, Jeb Dunnuck, Apr 2024

An absolutely brilliant wine in the vintage, the 2021 Clos Saint Julien reveals a healthy ruby hue to go with a terrific perfume of darker currants, cherries, camphor, spicy wood, and tobacco. It's medium to full-bodied, has fabulous concentration, fine tannins, and a great finish. This is one of the few 2021s that will compete with prior vintages. It offers pleasure today, yet this is one I wouldn’t be surprised to see shut down with 2-5 years of bottle age. I think it will ideally be given 5-7 years of bottle age, and it's going to see its 20th birthday in fine form. Hats off to the team for this remarkable effort.

The 2021 Clos Saint-Julien has a simple blackcurrant and wild strawberry nose that needs a little more personality. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannins and lacks a bit of tension, closing with a conservative, slightly austere finish. This is a wine for short term drinking, though it won't fall off a cliff after three to four years.

The 2021 Clos Saint-Julien is sublime. Delicate, silky and wonderfully nuanced, Clos Saint-Julien is exquisite in this vintage. Lavender, plum, spice, menthol, licorice and mocha are some of the many nuances that run through this exceptionally polished, understated Saint-Émilion. It should be a great relative value too.

The 2021 Clos Saint-Julien has a ripe nose that just lacks a bit of complexity. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannins, quite sinewy and nicely balanced. Not an elegant 2021, though there is good density on the finish. This will need prudent barrel maturation (currently in 60% new wood).
