1976 Cristal Rosé

Note di degustazione
Despite coming from another warm vintage (with a very hot, dry August – and harvested from 1st September), Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon notes the freshness on the 1976 vintage, and how it seems to have never become too evolved. It’s much more savoury than the 1976, with rye bread and brown miso sitting alongside caramelised pears, tarte tatin and a hint of Oloroso Sherry. The palate is a rush of fine bubbles, fresh and with a citrus bite but a savoury framework behind. A remarkable wine. Dosage 10g/l, tasted from magnum.

A very hot year, like the 1989 it was served alongside. Picking started on 1 September but technical director Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon commented that 'today we would have started on 15 August'. A heatwave year surpassed only in 2003. Dosage 12 g/l. Magnum. A strong orange tinge to this wine. With age this wine has become almost cheesy. A curiosity more than the display of sheer soaring quality provided by the other wines served at this lunch in London to celebrate 50 years of Cristal Rosé. (JR)
Original disgorgement in 1986. Ripe fruit year from a very long and dry summer; picked early August. Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon says it could have been a few days earlier. The second release of Cristal Ros é, the first being 1974. Livelier than the 1989 which Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon loves. Pungent and gorgeous. (JR)
Now in the autumn of its life, the 1976 Cristal Rosé is magnificent. Mint, rosewater, anise, coffee and orange marmalade flesh out in an ample, resonant Champagne of rare distinction. The 1976 is rich and generous on the palate, with noticeable sweetness in both its flavor profile and overall shape. Then again, during this era dosage was 12-13 grams per liter, as opposed to the 9 grams or so that is typical today. All things considered, the 1976 is in great shape today. Readers lucky enough to own the 1976 are in for a real treat, although I would not push my luck with holding it for too much longer.
