Leading off the 2017s from bottle, the 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape checks in as 90% Grenache and 10% Syrah brought up in 500-liter barrels. Reminding me of the 2007 with its powerful, full-throttle style, it has loads of kirsch, blackberries, melted licorice, and garrigue aromas and flavors. Full-bodied, concentrated, and yet still weightless and elegant, it’s a thrilling base cuvée readers should snatch up. Readers who love ripe, sexy, lusty Grenache driven wines will love the wines of Olivier Hillaire. They rarely pull any punches on the ripeness scale yet just ooze Provencal charm and character. Count me in as a big fan.

With its abundance of rich, chocolaty flavors, I'd opt for drinking the 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape within the next 6-7 years, while it still retains a bit of freshness. Full-bodied, concentrated and plummy, it's velvety in texture, finishing with more chocolaty flavors.
90% Grenache, 10% Syrah. Tasted blind. Lifted floral perfume intermingling with ripe red berries on the nose. Juicy and light-footed on the palate, with a sense of elegance that is too often missing from Châteauneuf – but needn't be, and this wine proves why. Refreshing, satisfying, flavoursome. (RH)
