Glass-staining violet. Explosive perfume of exotic red and dark fruit preserves, flowers and incense, with notes of spicy oak, cola and minerals adding complexity. Stains the palate with sweet raspberry and blackcurrant flavors, with allspice and cherry-cola nuances emerging with air. Seems utterly decadent at first but a sneaky spine of acidity builds with aeration and adds lift and clarity. This really clings on the sharply delineated back end, lingering with spices, minerals and floral perfume. "Long maceration isn't a technique we like because you risk losing aromatics," winemaker Eduardo Garcia told me at this point in my tasting at Mauro.

The 2005 Vendimia Seleccionada spent 33 months in barrel. A glass-coating opaque purple color, it proffers a compelling bouquet of pain grille, espresso, incense, truffle, black cherry, and blackberry. On the palate it has serious volume, outstanding concentration, complex black fruit flavors, and a lengthy, pure finish. Give it another 2-3 years of bottle age and drink it from 2013 to 2025.
