Punteggio 94/100 · Da bere 2024-2034, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, Apr 2025

The Tenuta di Fessina 2022 Etna Rosso Il Musmeci is made with fruit from ancient own-rooted vines that were planted between 1921 and 1932 over less than one hectare. These soils near Rovittello are dotted with volcanic basalt rocks. Production is halved to 3,333 bottles in this vintage because this wine represents a special selection of the best fruit from two parcels of alberello (bush-trained) vines. As identified in small typeface on the front label, these are Foglio 81 and Particella 161-176. This is a mid-weight Etna Rosso with a little more heft and general concentration in this hot vintage. The elegant bouquet reveals blackcurrant, dried rose and campfire ash. The wine is fermented in 35-hectoliter steel "silos" and then racked over to large-capacity French oak for 24 months. This vintage marks the very sad passing of the estate's dynamic and much-admired founder, Silvia Maestrelli.

The 2022 Etna Rosso Il Musmeci Prephilloxera is dusty and savory in the glass, revealing a burst of crushed stones that gives way to ground cloves, ginger and dried strawberries. Succulent red berry fruit floods the palate, guided by zesty acidity as a silken textural wave leads to a staining of minerals and fine tannins toward the close. Hints of blood orange linger through the long and structured finale as the 2022 tapers off with dramatic length. This is still youthfully coiled.

The 2022 Etna Rosso Il Musmeci Prephilloxera Particella 161-176 opens with an earthy array of crushed rocks, underbrush and woodland berries. It's soft and round in feel as tension builds through wild berry fruit and saline mineral tones, all further enhanced by a tinge of sour citrus. This leaves edgy tannins that pinch at the cheeks through the long and structured finale.
