The 2021 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Hauts-Lieux showed consistently, with a beautiful, lively array of darker berries, graphite, leather, and pepper in a medium to full-bodied, balanced, vibrant style. It plays in the fresher, more elegant style of the vintage yet this brings ample depth and richness.

Always one of my favorites in Daumen’s lineup, the 2021 Les Hauts-Lieux is more somber and introverted than expected, revealing aromas of blue fruits, pepper, earth and smoke. It’s medium to full-bodied, dense and concentrated on the palate, with a fleshy core of fruit, structured tannins and a long, deep, chocolate-inflected finish. The proportion of Mourvèdre (20%) is particularly noticeable in this vintage, lending the wine a more earthy, structured profile than usual, with chalky dry extracts. This is quite a serious Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
The 2021 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Hauts-Lieux turned out well, delivering lively red cherry, raspberry, strawberry, dried herbs and white pepper aromas. Not as powerful as either the 2020 or 2019, but more refined, it is a neatly structured offering from Jean-Paul Daumen and his son Antoine.
