Il Carnasciale's 2017 Carnasciale is a second wine made exclusively with the rare Caberlot grape that crosses genetic material of both Cabernet Franc and the softer Merlot grape. This vintage stands out because of the heat and drought that characterized the 2017 harvest. Those conditions created small, dark berries with lots of phenolic character to drive both the wine's color and tannins. However, winemakers generally took care to make sure the richness stayed in check. Indeed, this wine is a bit thinner and shorter in mouthfeel when compared to cooler vintages. I got a hint of animal musk or Band-Aid and am suggesting a shorter drinking window as a result.

The 217 Carnasciale is absolutely gorgeous. Rich, expansive and beautifully layered, the 2017 delivers all the complexity of the Merlot/Cabernet Franc hybrid that is planted in the estate's vineyards. Succulent dark cherry, plum, spice, espresso and leather all build as the 2017 shows of its alluring personality. The 2017 is a wine of pure and total allure.
Late frost and then five months of heat and not a drop of rain. Caberlot aged for 22 months in (70% new) barrique. On the nose a leathery note, but complex, adding something wild. A concentrated layer of raspberry fruit with chalky notes and hints of black pepper. Succulent, compact and with supple acidity and fine tannins. The leathery note is invisible on the palate. Its tightness indicates this needs much more time. Incredibly contained alcohol for this torrid vintage. (WS)
