Hint of old rope on the nose! Solid and polished but it lacks a bit of drive. A bit soft and earthbound, but some good chew on the end with a hint of cinnamon and good length. (JR)

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Au Closeau 1er Cru matures with 60% whole bunches and 60% new oak. It is not a monopole but Drouhin-Laroze is the only domaine to release a single bottling from this vineyard that is apparently so precocious that they conducted three green harvests in this vintage. It has a superb bouquet, very vibrant with vivacious red cherries, wild strawberry and mineral scents. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, very focused and precise with a sculpted, nuanced finish that is pure class.
