The 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champonnets 1er Cru has what feels like quite a mature bouquet with black tea and bay leaf. The palate is well defined if a little chewy towards the finish and like the Les Evocelles, I wish there was more fruit and flesh. Tasted at Goedhuis & Co.'s annual Burgundy tasting in London.

Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Champonnet has an open-knit, expressive red cherry and crushed strawberry-scented bouquet that is missing the focus and depth of its peers, though there is an attractive potpourri scent here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple ripe strawberry and redcurrant fruit, although it loses some vigor towards the finish that feels a little flat. This is another Gevrey-Chambertin that does not realize its potential from barrel. Tasted September 2016.
Healthy medium red. Pungent aromas of cranberry, pomegranate and minerals. Silky and creamy but also bright and precise, with perfectly integrated acidity giving a crystalline character to the rather powerful flavors of crunchy red berries and rose petal. The firm tannins are perfectly enrobed by the wine's sweet fruit. Despite the very cool growing season and harvest, this is one of many examples of a cold site that did very well in 2013.
