Medium ruby, heading to tertiary on the aromatics and the palate. Retracts rather than expands through the mid palate, but this has gentle charm, tobacco and iris flowers, charming, a thoroughly enoyable wine but could be 10 years older than the vintage on the label. 30% new oak, harvest September 29 to October 19. Pierre Rousseau owner, 35ha of vines.

The 2014 Château Laffitte Carcasset has an attractive nose, albeit one driven by the vanilla-laced new oak at the moment. It is a bit...flash. The palate is ripe and supple on the entry, certainly an easy-drinking Saint Estèphe compared to others, quite pure in fruit, a wine to enjoy over the next 4-5 years. Tasted September 2016.
65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, 12 months in barrel (30% new). Inky crimson. Marked sweet but charry oak aroma dominates the nose. On the palate, juicy and lively dark fruit, with the oak less obvious than at first. Chewy and satisfying, the fruit fades a little on the finish, so the aftertaste is slightly lean. (JH)
