Punteggio 94/100 · Da bere 2021-2030, Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate, Feb 2021

From a slightly cooler vintage, the 2012 Meshach Shiraz delivers more spice and red-berried fruit than the 2016. Vanilla and cedar notes accent raspberries on the nose, while the medium to full-bodied palate remains a bit tight and closed. This was looking better on the second day the bottle was open—more relaxed and welcoming, with a soft wash of dusty tannins on the long finish.

100% Shiraz. Named after Meshach Burge, great-grandfather of Grant Burge, who began the family’s winemaking in 1865. 100% Shiraz from old vines, some of which exceed 100 years of age. Hand-harvest. Fermented in stainless-steel open-top and static fermenters. 24 months in American and French oak hogsheads. Three years in bottle pre-release. TA 6.3 g/l, pH 3.2, RS 2.9 g/l. Saturated ruby with a hint of garnet. Maturing nose of grilled meat, dried liquorice and black tea, over a core of dried black cherry and mint. Thick, rich and full, with mouth-coating, powdery tannins and a markedly vanilla-clove finish. Good freshness though. More obviously in an ‘icon’ mould than the 2016, which is a little more subtle in its extraction and its oak treatment. (TJ)

A bold, rich and classically styled shiraz with some age in the bottle. Aromas of blackberries and mulberries are intertwined with fragrant spices and a robust, blackberry and plum-flavored palate. Rich and full body. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Aged for 20 months in French and American oak. Shiraz. Opulent oak on the nose giving sweet vanilla and toasted nuts. Firmly tannic on the palate, with superb clarity of fruit giving a dense, deep black-cherry character right through to the finish. The acidity is high, but not intrusive. Powerful, premium and true-to-type. (RH)
