Punteggio 86+/100 · Da bere 2024-2032, Neal Martin, Feb 2023

The 2020 Lousteauneuf comes across a little over-oaked on the nose, though that might well be soaked up with time. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins. It feels a little forced at the moment, though I would afford it another couple of years, and it may muster more refinement.

Cabernet dominant with cassis bud and tobacco leaf aromatics and dark fruit focus, this has an inky plum colour and is well balanced. Earthy finish, with spiced oak. Located close to the Estuary. Tasted twice. 12 months ageing in barrels, casks and amphora.

The 2020 Chateau Lousteauneuf has a deep purple-black color and notions of Morello cherries, wild blueberries and cassis with hints of bay leaves, fragrant earth and tree bark. The medium-bodied palate delivers a good intensity of crunchy black and red fruit flavors, supported by grainy tannins and a lively backbone, finishing with an invigorating herbal lift.

The 2020 Lousteauneuf, aged in two-thirds new oak with 15% aged in 20-hectoliter foudres, has plenty of black plum, boysenberry and raspberry coulis scents on the nose; this is one of the more opulent Médoc wines this vintage. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins and good acidity; maybe a little rustic toward the finish, but it conveys rugged charm.
