The 2013 Clos Saint Denis Très Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru has a lot of reduction on the nose. Once you get past that, the palate feels firm in the mouth with dense, brittle brambly black fruit cut through with a citric thread of acidity and quite a powerful finish that demonstrates good backbone - a Clos Saint Denis not to be messed around with and demanding respect. That said, I don't believe that it will turn out to be as complex as the Clos de la Roche, quite masculine but you cannot deny the symmetry in situ.

Planted in 1905. Lacks only 12% of the plants. It was ‘a forest’ with brambles etc, and when they bought it in 1982 they had to clean it up. This was the wine Rudy tried to sell 1940s vintages of. The Romanée-Conti of Ponsot for Laurent. Dark crimson. Reduced a bit and it will be racked soon. Very good attack and bright ripe fruit. Great precision. (JR)

Domaine Ponsot is one of the most well-known estates in the Côte de Nuits, famed for owning three of the original four hectares of the Clos de la Roche Grand Cru. The legendary domaine also produces another nine Grand Cru cuvées.
