Punteggio 90/100 · Da bere 2020-2033, Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, Jun 2017

The 2014 Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru has a lively bouquet with crushed strawberry, morello, mango and orange blossom. The palate is medium-bodied, conservative, tightly wound and structured. This just needs a little more tension and detail, especially on the finish that as I noted out of barrel, requires a little more presence and concentration. Perhaps this is still a little upset after being bottled months ago? Let's see how it develops over the next 2-4 years. Tasted November 2016.

(40% vendange entier ): Palish bright medium red. Inviting soil-driven scents of redcurrant, dried flowers, mocha and earth, plus a whiff of smoked meat. Then almost surprisingly tight in the mouth, but showing excellent energy to its youthfully inexpressive red berry and floral flavors. This savory, rather strict version of Charmes will need patience. Finishes with a fine dusting of tannins.

Round and sweet but with an odd note – as though some strange oak had been used. Not as charming as the name suggests. (JR)

(40% vendange entier , but Liger-Belair removes the main stalk of each cluster; 60% new oak, with the barrels selected "for freshness"):Moderately saturated medium red; Liger-Belair did no punchdowns here because he wanted to avoid excessive "roundness and largeness."Captivating perfumed aromas of raspberry, dried flowers and smoked meat. Very concentrated and intense, showing surprising saline energy to the sappy red berry and subtle floral flavors. Finishes spicy, perfumed and long and not overly tannic. This wine boasts very good body but shows no sign of heavy extraction. Liger-Belair purchases grapes from true Charmes and also takes care of the vineyards.
