The 2019 Echézeaux Les Treux Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru has a powerful bouquet with layers of black fruit, crushed violet and incense. It does not possess the delineation or Pinoté of its peers, yet there is purity and no signs of blowsiness. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins. This is a bold style of winemaking, plush and luxuriant, and though I prefer more intellectual heft, it is pulled off successfully and will appeal to those who like their Pinot with presence and weight. Gourmand and dramatic, the 2019 Echézeaux Grand Cru Les Treux Vieilles Vignes wafts from the glass with notions of sweet berry fruit, creamy new oak, exotic spices, dark chocolate and loamy soil. Full-bodied, layered, rich and velvety, its succulent acids and unusually soft tannins are cloaked in a lavish core of fruit. This is the best young wine I've tasted from Tardy.
The 2019 Echézeaux Les Treux Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru is still quite oaky on the nose and covers the fruit profile, making it difficult to read. The palate is supple in texture, quite candied and ripe, fleshy with blueberry and cassis fruit, smooth and harmonious towards the finish. Give it another 4-5 years in bottle - this is going through a sullen stage.
