FINE+RARE, Oct 2024

The nose here offers pure dark-berry fruit, with a floral accent – violet and iris. On the palate, the fruit evolves into rich, deep plum with a twist of redcurrant freshness – lending the wine a pleasingly tart bite, complementing the fleshy fruit and framework of tannin. There’s a satisfying, savoury, spicy edge to the long finish.

The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques (Domaine Louis Jadot) is also showing well, revealing notes of plums and cherries mingled with notions of licorice and toasty new oak. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and seamless, with a sweet core of fruit and supple, powdery tannins, it will offer a broad drinking window. Winemaker Frédéric Barnier and his team have once again delivered a strong portfolio chez Jadot. Barnier stressed the importance of sorting and of vigilance during élevage, in particular where acid rot made an appearance, and he didn't hesitate to perform a saignée for cuvées where yields where high. As I've written before, in the cellar, foudres and 500-liter barrels now complement classic 228-liter pièces, a further evolution adapting to warmer, riper vintages. What's more, barrels are now used four rather than three times, meaning the percentage of new oak overall has fallen. A cold room also helps chill down any fruit that's too warm when it enters the winery, something especially important during the warm 2023 harvest. This vintage also marks the third vintage of organic conversion for the Domaine Louis Jadot and the Domaine Gagey.

Cask sample. Scary price! Mid to light cherry red. Beautifully fragrant with both dark-red fruit and a gentle floral seduction. Fine peppery spice. Rounded, generous in fruit yet tightly wound in structure. I know this is a big name but I don’t think it is worth double the price of the 1er Cru Estournelles-St-Jacques. It is deep, long and delicious.
