Punteggio 93/100 · Da bere 2022-2030, Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate, Jul 2022

The 1991 Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial comes from a vintage they considered very good and with the tannic structure to age well. It was produced with 75% Tempranillo, 13% Mazuelo, 10% Garnacha and 2% Graciano that matured in tank for four months followed by 60 months in American oak barrels of different sizes. It was bottled in July 1997 with 13.3% alcohol and 7.3 grams of acidity and 0.75 grams of volatile acidity. 1991 felt a bit more classical, with balance, fruit and structure and more integrated acidity, than the wines from the 1980s. There is a touch of meat and leather. It's medium-bodied and balanced.

Vivid red. Cherry, cured tobacco, pungent herbs, cedary oak and dried flowers on the nose, joined by a slowly emerging hint of vanilla. A sweet, seamless, mature midweight that offers mellow red fruit and floral pastille flavors along with allspice, vanilla and licorice flourishes. Finishes very long and smooth, with gentle tannins framing lingering cherry and spicecake notes.
