The 2003 Grand Mayne was cropped at just 19hl/ha, the lowest yields due to a heat wave. It offers smudged red fruit mixed with raspberry jam and kirsch, still quite fresh if not tremendously complex. The palate is medium-bodied with soft tannins, quite confit-like with better freshness than its peers thanks to its earlier picking, ergo the alcohol is a modest 13.5%. Hints of camphor towards the finish and white pepper on the aftertaste together complete a 2003 Right Bank that is definitely one of the better, more vigorous examples. Tasted at the Grand Mayne vertical at the property.

A full-bodied, sexy, fully mature 2003, this opulent St.-Emilion offers up notes of blueberries, raspberries, licorice, figs and wood spice. It is generously endowed and seductive with low acidity as well as fully integrated tannin. Consume it over the next 4-5 years.
Dark crimson. Very sweet and heady with overripe notes of black fruits and something animal. Far from pure – in fact, a bit sickly. Very chewy tannins. (JR)
