Punteggio 92/100 · Da bere 2026-2042, Jeb Dunnuck, Apr 2024

From a château that seems to have hit a new level recently, the 2021 Château Soutard is based on 80% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Franc, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Malbec, all from vines just north of the village. Beautiful black and blue fruits, graphite, subtle tobacco, and a crushed stone-like minerality define the aromatics, and it's medium-bodied, with a seamless, layered mouthfeel and ripe, integrated tannins. I finished my note with "Love it." Give it a few years and enjoy over the following 15+.

The 2021 Soutard has such a potent peppermint scent on the nose that it obscures the terroir expression. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly dry tannins and moderate complexity. Dried blood and black pepper mix with cloves toward the finish. This just feels a little austere compared to its barrel showing, though it's not bad and will drink over the medium term.

Punteggio 93/100 · Da bere 2026-2041, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Feb 2024

The 2021 Soutard is a sensual, creamy Saint-Émilion. Supple tannins wrap around a core of inky dark blue fruit, lavender, spice, licorice, menthol and chocolate. All the elements are so well balanced in this gorgeous, inviting offering. Pretty floral notes lift the gracious finish. This is such a classy wine.

The 2021 Soutard unwinds in the glass with aromas of dark berries, plums and spices mingled with hints of violet and iris. Medium to full-bodied, supple and seamless, it's deep and layered, with an impressively concentrated core of pure, vibrant fruit that's framed by sweet, powdery tannins and integrated acids. Transcending the vintage, this property's relentless upward trajectory continues.
