The 2015 Riesling Scharzhofberger Beerenauslese is amber in the glass. The nose is exquisitely ethereal, referencing top conifer notes over a mind-filling scent of dried fig leaf and smoky fig prunings with all their perfumed creaminess. The palate is sweet, luscious, viscous and pervaded by absolute citrus intensity. Candied lemon peel is the lead note, with dark fir honey and dried fig adding accents. This is a scintillating chiaroscuro game of heightened expression and exquisite length. Elixir-like. Available at auction: 24 half bottles, 18 bottles, 3 magnums. (Luscious)

Reflecting multiple selections for shriveled berries spread out through October, this wine will rest in the Scharzhof cellars for at least a few years before any is sold, which will then probably not be at auction. Apricot and mirabelle preserves studded with candied ginger and laced with smoky black tea deliver a heady aromatic message, followed by luscious abundance on a creamy, viscous palate. There is an Esszencia-like sense of density and almost ominously tense standoff between enormous acidity and correspondingly abundant residual sugar. Hazelnut paste and honey add to the allure of an incessantly flavorful finish. This long keeper, wonderful though it already tastes, is really embryonic.

The 2015 Scharzhofberger Riesling Beerenauslese is very clear, intense and aromatic on the nose, and reveals perfectly selected Botrytis berries. The wine has a great finesse and elegance on the palate, and its finish is pure, salty, stunningly fresh and finessed, but firmly structured. This BA has an excellent grip and stimulatingly piquancy. A hilarious drinking pleasure for many decades.
