The distinct character to the 2019 Lafite is the incredible contrasting density of tannins that are so fine, so integrated, that they seem to melt in the mouth, only to find layer upon layer of tanin stacking up further on the palate. For now this remains incredibly compact, perfectly composed, capturing a lovely freshness and concentration of fruit that will no doubt unfurl over many years as it matures. The balance of the wine contrasted with the density and refined tannins is testament to the precision you find in top Lafite.

Tasted blind – we only know it is from 2019 and could be Ao Yun. In retrospect, this should have a longer drinking date, given its reputation. Deep garnet colour. Sweet oak on the nose, followed up with ripe cassis with a definite edge of confection. There seems to be a bit of smokiness that might suggest Stellenbosch too, and there is the right sort of savoury chew for that style. Driven by fruit, without much indication of complexity yet, although there is a medicinal note underneath. (RH)
Full bottle 1,293 g – light! Tasted blind. Paler than most with mid evolution. Very discreet aroma – hidden depths or subtlety? This could certainly be Lafite with its relatively light body and saline, dancing finish. Very elegant. Subtle. The epitome of raciness! Much the best wine in this blind line-up of top Cabs with top Chinese. (JR)
Tasted blind. Weaker, more-evolved ruby colour than most. Interesting tobacco-leaf aromas. Sweet, dramatic, concentrated fruit initially, with a little chewiness and masses of freshness. Flattering, lots of detail and quite distinctive. Not as long as some. (JR)
