A major sleeper of the vintage, this wine is from Stephan von Neipperg. This gorgeous wine, which is Merlot-dominated with some Cabernet Franc, has turned out to be excellent and is certainly one of the real value picks in 2013. Most people would be smart to taste it out of bottle, but it is loaded. Dense ruby/purple with notes of cedar wood, Christmas fruitcake, spice box and creme de cassis, it has a surprisingly good and lush texture, light tannins and adequate acidity. Drink it over the next 7-8 years.

The 2013 d'Aiguilhe is quite pretty and silky on the palate, with gorgeous length to match its energetic personality. Violets, cinnamon, cloves and spices add nuance on the chiseled, limestone-infused finish. This is a terrific showing from Stephan von Neipperg. The malos were late here, so I will not at all be surprised to see the 2013 show even better in another few months. Yields were just 10 hectoliters per hectare. The blend is 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, harvested between September 27 and October 9. Tasted twice.
