Lastly, the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Spéciale is a true "wow" wine if there ever was one. I believe all from La Crau and mostly Grenache, it has incredible purity in its blue fruits, peppery herbs, violets, and graphite-like aromas and flavors. Deep, full-bodied, and flawlessly balanced, with ripe tannins and a great mid-palate, this absolutely brilliant 2020 needs just 2-3 years of bottle age and I suspect will see its 20th birthday in fine form. Bravo!

100% 30- to 40-year-old Syrah from Coteaux de Mercurol and Habrard on granite, all destemmed. NB relatively low alcohol. Aged for 10 months in one- and two-year-old barrels. Then six months in foudres. To be released spring 2022 – much earlier than the other Châteauneufs from this address. Cask sample. Dark crimson. Oh dear, this cask sample is a little oxidised. Very sweet and sinewy. It’s much fresher than the truly oxidised Vacqueyras and possible to score, I think. Particularly luscious Syrah fruit that segues into definite heat and grip on the finish. An unusual wine. I think I’d stick to the Vieilles Vignes Grenache for preference. (JR)
