The dark ruby-colored 2007 Aphrodite is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in new French oak for 18 months. Herbal, eucalyptus, and cassis aromas are unpleasantly green-tinged. Firm, slightly tart and tannic on the palate, this compact effort is especially disappointing considering the lofty price tag. Michael Twelftree’s Two Hands negociant label is solid but not quite up to the standards established by the past several years because of the challenging 2007 and 2008 vintages in South Australia. The wines are discussed in the order in which they were presented. The Garden Series is designed to highlight Shiraz from a diversity of appellations (or GIs as they are known in Australia). Glass-staining ruby. Pungent, intensely spicy bouquet displays blackcurrant, cherry-cola, cherry skin, tobacco, smoky minerals and dried rose. Surprisingly energetic and fresh on the palate, with a subtle mintiness to the sweet, almost crystallized red and dark berry and bitter cherry flavors. Taut and energetic on the sharply focused finish, leaving a complex trail of fresh red fruits and flowers behind.
