Dark and intense, the 2017 Taurasi Radici Riserva smolders up with a mesmerizing blend of crushed ashen stones, graphite, lavender and dried wild berries. This enters the palate lean at first, gaining energy through a core of tart citrus and savory spice as tart red fruits saturate the senses. The 2017 leaves the mouth reeling with a web of fine tannins and a twist of sour orange that puckers the cheeks. This is just a baby today, but it has the balance to mature beautifully over time.

In the bottle with the white label, the Mastroberardino 2017 Taurasi Riserva Radici shows evolved fruit notes and abundant oak toast with campfire ash, cooked plum, exotic spice and barbecue. This was a challenging vintage in southern Italy with very hot and dry growing conditions that made for difficult fruit selection. You sense that ripeness here thanks to the wine's rather abundant personality and its cooked fruit flavors. The oak element is strong in this 20,000-bottle release.
