Punteggio 92/100 · Da bere 2026-2045, Jeb Dunnuck, Mar 2026

The second wine of this reference point Saint-Emilion estate located on the upper plateau, the 2023 La Closerie De Fourtet comes mostly from clay soils just across the street from the château as well as from younger vines on the plateau around the château. Ripe darker cherries and currants intermixed with leafy herbs, tobacco, and damp earth all emerge from the nose, and it's medium-bodied, round, and mouthfilling on the palate, with polished, elegant tannins and a great finish. Drink this charming effort over the coming 15-20 years. Drink 2026-2045.

The 2023 La Closerie de Fourtet is a very sexy second wine. Soft contours wrap around a core of bright red-toned fruit. Hints of orange peel, chalk, mint and white pepper add aromatic brilliance as the 2023 shows off its considerable allure. All the elements are very nicely balanced throughout. The blend is 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc (the most Franc this wine has ever had_, the result of young vines that have recently been replanted and that are being used in La Closerie for the time being.

The 2023 La Closerie de Clos Fourtet has a light but pretty bouquet with raspberry and wild strawberry fruit and a touch of cedar lingering in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit and just a little chewiness toward the finish. It’s a perfectly decent Deuxième Vin to drink over five to eight years.
