Punteggio 90/100 · Da bere 2026-2036, Jeb Dunnuck, Mar 2026

A juicy, plummy, and satisfying Francs, the 2023 Château Puygueraud is based on 90% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Malbec that was aged in 30% new French oak with the balance in second-fill barrels. Medium-bodied on the palate, it has ripe, round fruit, solid tannins, good overall balance, and some herbal, spicy nuances on the finish. Drink this enjoyable effort over the coming 8-10 years. Drink 2026-2036.

The 2023 Puygueraud is packed with dark red plum, new leather, licorice, dried herbs and incense. Fruit is nicely pushed forward in this mid-weight offering from the Thienpont family. The 2023 is an especially rich, heady edition of Puygueraud because of low yields and intense heat at the end of the season. Tasted three times.

The 2023 Puygueraud feels just a little muddled on the nose and lacks the delineation that I have discerned on other vintages. The palate is medium-bodied, with sour cherry on the opening, dry tannins and a lightweight finish. I have drunk much better from this estate.

Soft and delicious, showing blackberry, mushroom, bark and spice aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied with round tannins and a savory, even plush finish. Sweet, ripe fruit. But then goes crunchy. A blend of 90% merlot, 9% cabernet franc and 1% malbec. Drink or hold.
