Da bere 2035-2060, FINE+RARE, Apr 2024

This is very perfumed and lively on the nose, with lacy finesse and precision, led by floral notes of violet and lilac, supported by a hint of clove and sweet spice. On the palate, this is a very elegant and such a classic Margaux, backed by soft, weightless and velvety tannins. Concentrated and juicy, this is so enjoyable, with that typical note of graphite appearing on the mid-palate, leading to savoury notes and a saline finish. Fresh and pure, this is a sumptuous example of the 2023 vintage at its best, a beautiful Ch. Margaux build to rival the finest recent vintages. Aged in 100% new oak, with 13.1% alcohol and 3.6pH. Blend: 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot

The 2023 Château Margaux is a delicate, beguiling wine. Floral aromatics make a strong first impression. A wine of nuance and understatement, the Margaux Grand Vin is light on its feet, with sublime balance and tons of class. This has closed down quite a bit since I tasted it from barrel, but that is not especially surprising. Readers will find a super-classic Grand Vin—a Margaux that is exactly as it should be.

The Grand Vin 2023 Château Margaux is based on 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot, and 2% Cabernet Franc and was aged 21 months in 100% new French oak. Deep purple-hued and opaque, it offers sensational aromatics of crème de cassis, mulberries, flowery incense, blue fruits, graphite, and smoky tobacco on the nose. It's full-bodied on the palate and has a broad, layered, seamless mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and a gorgeous finish. It's not far off the style of the 2020 and is shockingly good! Will it shut down? Time will tell, but this is a sensational effort that deserves a solid decade of bottle age. Drink 2035-2073.

The 2023 Château Margaux, which was bottled at the beginning of July, is a supremely gifted wine for the vintage. It unfolds in the glass with precise, quite mineral-driven black cherry and blueberry fruit, the patina of new oak suggesting it will require six or seven years in bottle. The palate is medium-bodied with a satin-like texture that lends this First Growth weightlessness, yet paradoxically, there is still impressive concentration and persistence. This was so seductive in barrel and it has lost none of that in bottle.
