A Merlot-heavy blend of 78% Merlot and 22% Cabernet Franc aged 12 months in 21% new oak barrels with the balance in amphora, the 2023 Château Grand Barrail Lamarzelle Figeac offers juicy red fruits, cherries, mulberries, leather, and savory, herbal, and floral nuances on the nose. Medium-bodied on the palate, it has ripe, polished tannins, nice concentration, and a good finish. Drink this solid effort over the coming 8-10 years. Drink 2026-2036.

The 2023 Grand Barrail Lamarzelle Figeac is powerful, rustic and a bit rough around the edges. Red cherry fruit, white pepper, cinnamon and new leather struggle to emerge. Searing tannins are impossible to look past.
The 2023 Grand Barrail Lamarzelle Figeac has a very light, rather mean nose that lacks fruit concentration. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannins on the entry. This has thankfully gained a bit of density since its barrel showing, though it still feels too simple for its class, a bit uncouth.
Lovely aromas of ripe berries, fine spices, plums and a touch of graphite. Firm and nicely chewy, with a medium body and a tight, medium-long finish. 78% merlot and 22% cabernet franc. Better in one or two years when the tannins soften more.
