Punteggio 94/100 · Da bere 2026-2040, Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux, Nov 2023

Oak edged, tar and smoke, plump red and black fruits, liqourice, black chocolate, mandarin, iris flowers. As of 2023 there is be a tiny amount of this wine (less than half a hectare I believe) that will keep the brand going, but most of the vines will be in Château Marquis de Terme - giving a reason to look out for these last few years of bottling, when the style had begun to resemble more closely a traditional Margaux, still with a large dollop of glamour. 60% new barrels, 40% one-year barrels.

Dried flowers, incense, spice, espresso and black currants show in the nose. On the palate the wine is round, supple, creamy, polished and forward with a finish packed with black and red currants and chocolate. Drink from 2024-2045.

I loved the nose on the 2020 Château Marojallia, a medium to full-bodied, concentrated Margaux delivering loads of spring flowers, cassis, graphite, and classy oak-driven nuances. It shows the restrained, elegant, yet structured style of the vintage nicely and is going to benefit from 4-6 years of bottle age. I suspect it will see its 20th birthday in fine form.

The 2020 Marojallia is one of the best releases to date with a very well-defined nose that is more sophisticated than previous vintages, a mélange of red and black fruit, sous-bois , graphite and bay leaf. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins, tensile and structured but there is real elegance and precision here. This is well worth hunting down.
