(Leroux lost one-third of the crop here but noted that the wall around Clos Vougeot gave his vines some protection): Dark red. Inviting ripe perfume of cherry, raspberry and licorice. Distinctly fatter and sweeter in the mouth than the Echézeaux, conveying a more pliant texture and lovely perfume as well as a strong mineral character. Then tougher on the back end, finishing with substantial chewy, tongue-dusting tannins and an impression of medicinal reserve.

The 2016 Clos de Vougeot La Petit Maupertuis, which is 75% whole bunch, has a well-defined bouquet, a mixture of black and blue fruit not unlike a Bonnes Mares in style. It just conveys a sense of exuberance, joie de vivre. The palate is fresh and lithe on the entry, a fine-boned Clos de Vougeot with very neatly integrated oak (a single one-year-old barrel) with a long, tender, detailed finish. This is an outstanding Clos de Vougeot from Leroux.
A parcel by the wall. Served last because it’s structured but he admits there is not a strict logic. Racy and energetic on the nose. Round and sweeter and more transparent than most from this vineyard. Lots to chew on. (JR)
