FINE+RARE, Nov 2023

The vines in this parcel are comparatively young for Heresztyn-Mazzini, at around 40 years old – not that you’d know from the concentration here. It’s aged in 40% new oak and saw around 80% whole-bunch in 2022. The nose is relatively muted with florals sitting alongside toasty, vanilla notes. There’s a rush of fruit on the palate, with a brightness and grip of tannins that tightens around the core of fruit. There’s juicy acidity that balances the structure with the oak providing a nougat richness, leading on to the long, savoury, smoky finish.

Beautifully spicy aromas of red and dark cherry, crushed fennel, violet and rose petal are trimmed in very generous wood. The delicious and attractively textured flavors are not especially dense but the supporting tannins are sophisticated and refined on the moderately austere, long and surprisingly powerful finale. This is also going to need extended keeping.

Cask sample. Mid cherry red. Such gorgeously pure dark-red fruit on the nose, just a little bit stemmy. Dry, chewy tannins infused by the fruit. Not rich but balanced and quite powerful in its dry tannic framework. Not trying to please but should do, given time. (JH)

A fine bright purple. The nose is solid and concentrated, in a forward style of raspberry fruit. There is a wealth of fruit on the palate though not as seductive as Clos St-Denis can be, but all in balance and with an agreeably long finish. A really sensible, poised, approach to winemaking. 80% whole bunch vinification hardly shows, while 50% new oak feels about right.
