Da bere 2028-2050, FINE+RARE, Nov 2023

As of 2022, Nicole has a slightly smaller plot of Echezeaux, with her cousin Nathalie’s 0.3-hectare parcel now being farmed by Comte Liger-Belair, however she still has one hectare, which is a sizeable plot – and, thank goodness, given how stunning the 2022 is. The wine glimmers and glints, shifting in and out of focus with its elusive aromatics. Florals, crunchy red fruit, chalky minerality and incredible purity, with an electricity that drives the wine. It evolves in the mouth, the fruit darker with a brooding intensity and more savoury edge and an iron-edged minerality.

Here the equally expressive nose is spicier still with its broad-ranging aromas of red and dark pinot fruit, violet, exotic tea and dried orange peel hints. There is less minerality but more power to the generously proportioned medium weight plus flavors that possess solid delineation that carries over to the firm, dusty and tautly muscular finish. An even pinkish crimson. One of the prettier bouquets here, though still needs teasing out. As with all her wines, what starts seeming to be very much on the light side, then gives a little more concentration on the palate. Still always going to be among the lighter styles of Burgundy, but could offer something in the ethereal direction with time. Attractive with some length, if little muscle.

The 2022 Echézeaux from Lamarche is impressive, with more richness than most of the range (except La Grande Rue) and a fragrant cherry and pomegranate fruit with hints of peony and liquorice. The fruit aromas continue on the palate with great purity and finesse, but the wine is not lacking in structure. The balance overall is exemplary. The grapes come from 1.07 hectares in Vignes Blanches ou Cruouts and the Clos Saint-Denis lieu-dit in Echézeaux; she no longer has access to the quarter-hectare in Champs Traversins, but this is a delight even without that contribution.
